We’re inviting you to get to know three amazing local ‘Friends’ of the trails groups. Thanks to them we have access to beautiful, maintained trails all year round all across SDG!
Friends of the Glengarry Trails Association (FGTA)
Say hello to the Friends of the Glengarry Trails Association (FGTA) who maintain beautiful, all-season trail system in the Township of North Glengarry. Located in the Garry River watershed just west of Alexandria, the trail system features both woodland and wetland areas. The FGTA have built boardwalks, small bridges and interpretive signs. You can join them for their weekly Wednesday Walking Club – they meet at the Island Park in Alexandria at 9 am for a group walk on the trails.
Friends of the Summerstown Trails
Meet the Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST), a volunteer-run, incorporated non-for-profit group with a mandate to maintain and develop green, recreational trails for healthy outdoor activities in the Summerstown Forest. FOTST operates mainly in the winter, with an impressive network of cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking trails. Hiking and mountain biking can also be enjoyed outside the winter months. In recent years, the FOTST are constantly improving the trails by expanding them, adding better signage, purchasing new grooming equipment, hosting activities and increasing their ski, snowshoe and fat bike rental program!
The Friends of the Sanctuary works to support, promote and conserve the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary and encourage an appreciation of nature. The Sanctuary has more than eight kilometers of self guided hiking trails, and close to 150 different bird species to watch for. Volunteers from the Friends of the Sanctuary runs a variety of programs and events during the off season (late fall, winter, early spring) which allows the Sanctuary to operate year-round.
