For June is Walk and Roll Month, we celebrated local people who walk, ride their bikes, or take transit. These are your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours! Learn about why they love to walk and roll. Oh, and next time you see them out walking and rolling, be sure to say hello!
Meet David! He has ridden a bicycle since he was a child. Now, he rides an electric assist bike to get around but he pedals as much as possible. He only uses the assist when he’s carrying a heavy load or when there’s a strong headwind. David uses his bike to get groceries, go to the pool and will even ride to and from the Yacht Club in Long Sault. “It’s always been part of me – an easy way to keep active and save costs.”
Here’s what Rosie had to say about riding her bike: “I’ve been riding my bike for three years. I love to ride because it’s fun and I get to spend time with my mama and papa. I bike to school, soccer and swimming when I can…but my favourite place to go is Menchie’s.”
Kevin, a huge self-professed Habs fan, rides Cornwall Handi-Transit daily. When asked what he likes best about taking the bus, he answered without hesitation. Most of all, he loves the independence that the bus afford him but he also enjoys meeting new people and joking around with the bus driver. In fact, he wanted to show his gratitude and insisted the bus driver join him in this picture. Ride on, Kevin!
Cheers to Nicole and Claudette! These active sisters started walking and cycling together before work almost 20 years ago as a way to get in some daily activity and be accountable to one another. Even though they’ve both been retired for almost five years, that hasn’t stopped them from meeting every day. Unless the weather is particularly brutal, you can be sure that they’ll be out for their hour-long walk or bike ride. These meet ups play a key role in their ability to maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, something that they’ve both fostered with their own families. This picture captures the reality of their daily rendez-vous. Nothing fancy…they literally get up, brush their teeth, pull on some clothing and head out. No fuss, no muss!
Say hello to this father and son duo, champions of active transportation! Christian started walking to work about six months ago. He’s lost 5kg, feels more energized and has noticed that his blood sugar and cholesterol levels are now back to normal! Nathan is the cyclist in the family. He says he keeps fit by riding his bike all over town. And he loves that he never has to spend time waiting for the bus!
